Documents & budget
In this section you can download (PDF) our annual budget.
Since the birth of UMUDUFU quite a few important things have taken place. We have carried out many projects, some of which have been finalised as a result of having received the requisite funds whilst others are still receiving continued financial support.
All our projects are tightly monitored by the Board of Directors and its active members who often go off to Rwanda to supervise the efficiency and success of the projects.
To make it easy for interested parties to keep track of the projects in question, we have divided the website into two sections:
-
Projects that have been finalised.
-
On-going projects for which support is still needed and for which a donation would be gratefully appreciated.
In addition, we have also set up a distance-sponsor project.
This project is designed to support children and their families, as these are brought to our attention by the social workers Jacqueline and Leonia with the co-operation of the Sisters in Cyeza, in Mbare and in Butare.
3 years of UMUDUFU … let’s work responsibly together!
“The children are delighted with the project. I met Mutabazi today, a child in his first year who benefits from the project. He is 8 years old and this is what he told me: “ In the evening I don’t eat. I leave my mother to share the little supper we have between my 5 brothers and sisters. I tell them that I, at least, ate well at lunch time”. He told me this with a smile on his face which convinced me that he considered himself very fortunate to allow the others to have something to eat at least….” (from Agnès Mujawamariya, the head mistress of Kivumu Primary School).
It is our pleasure to celebrate this third anniversary of UMUDUFU by sharing with you part of that letter sent us by the Head Mistress of Kivumu Primary School in October. It refers to the “Canteen Project”, a new project we started last September (2007). We think that these few words suffice in motivating us to greater commitment, so that we, along with your our co-benefactors, may continue to give ourselves in an impassioned way to those poor people of Rwanda.
We think that these few words are enough to disturb us once more into reflecting and questioning ourselves on the living conditions of millions of people.
We think that these few words will stimulate us to do something for and be part of UMUDUFU. Another year has passed and UMUDUFU has grown, not only in terms of data we’ve gathered but with everything to do with UMUDUFU: its activities, its projects, its commitments.
As we promised you a year ago, we have sought to structure and define our project, spontaneously conceived and realised as it was, in order to render it as functional as possible and giving it a certain coherence whilst maintaining the style we adopted in helping the poorest of the people.
Besides the pleasant and motivating aspects of this venture, we have also had to face difficulties which arise from our activities either in Rwanda or here in Italy, where information, sensitisation and organization require more and more time, energy and availability; it is not only a question of time but also has to do with accommodating various cultural differences and the other persons’ time too.
Celebrating this third year of the coming into being of UMUDUFU, we would like to inform you of the state of the project, of the latest and new projects that we are involved in, but also of the necessity of contributing to the continuation of UMUDUFU.
Canteen Project – a new project for Kivumu Primary School
Kivumu Primary school has a daily intake of 1,635 children with only 30 classrooms to house them. The school has no hall and the children eat whatever they bring from home in the schoolyard together. More than 300 children come to school empty-handed are forced to go without lunch each day. For them to eat at least one complete meal a day is a right and proper luxury.
With the collaboration of the Head Mistress, Agnes Mujawamariya, 36 children, close to malnutrition have been isolated and for this reason we launched a small pilot project in collaboration with the Health Centre of Kivumu. Each day during the lunch break, the children come accompanied by 2 boys chosen by the Teachers from the sixth form to the Health centre where the children have the possibility of eating one hot meal.
Thanks to the close collaboration established with Sr. Therese and Sr. Monique of the Health Centre, the health of the children are constantly monitored. Furthermore seeds have been bought for the families of the 300 children who for the moment cannot join the “Canteen Project”. The Head Mistress, together with the teachers have distributed the seeds in question to the families during a meeting in which she explained to them how to go about cultivating and the importance of a well-balanced diet.
A small this may be, but we hope to have planted the seed that will lead the families to self-sufficiency. Our hope for the future is to succeed in increasing the number of children who will benefit from the “Table project”.
Follow-up Programme for the Health Centre of Kivumu
Many of the children who are discharged from the Health Centre fall back into malnutrition. This is because they live far away and often do not come back for periodical checks, something which reflects the difficult economic conditions of the families or because of the impossibility of monitoring their condition by the personnel at the Centre.
For this reason we have, last August, set up a sustained “follow-up programme” in which the acquisition of goats, rabbits and seed goes towards supplementing the basic necessities of these families and thereby strengthening their bond with the Health Centre and particularly in the 6 months following their discharge.
We continue to support the Health Centre’s personnel in the matter of expenses for:
- for a Vetinerary doctor for the control of cows and goats.
- for a Social Assistant (Sylvie) who supervises the preparation of well-balanced meals, the hygiene of hospitalised children and the general control of the Health Centre.
MAIBOBO (project for street kids) – Ruhengeri
Father Giuseppe Lucchetta (an Italian priest) runs a project for street kids and looks after the poorest families in Ruhengeri, north of the country. There he rents a big house where he lives together with “I Fratelli del Nazareno” –“The Brothers of the Nazarene”, a group of kids that decided to live together, in a simple way, dedicating their time to the poorest and marginalised of people.
A couple of them are now involved in making contact with street children and the poorest families, in search for a solution to their basic needs. The house is big enough to accommodate a few street kids.
Parallel to the creation of the Brothers of the Nazarene, runs the “Street Kids” project which is in collaboration with other Associations taking care of the marginalised.
TWIZERANE ASSOCIATION – Health Centre in Kivumu
The continued purchase of food for some of the 150 HIV positive women and their children.
- The Mill used for grinding cereals like sorghum, manioc, etc, is in constant use and will, within a year, make the Twizerane a self-financing Association.
- The Plot of land that we have acquired near the Health Centre has been terraced. It is being cultivated and is taken in charge by the women of the Association.
SOCIAL SERVICES – Kabgayi Hospital
The Social Service has this year been subject to internal reorganization. Thanks also to the Bishop of Kabgayi, what, at the beginning, was the cause of problems of communication between the hospital and UMUDUFU, has been resolved,. As a result we have documents that clearly set out the role and engagement of the Social Service the purpose of which is to guarantee health care to the poorest people.
SPONSOR – Cyeza, Butare and Mbare
For the moment, we support 60 children and their families, with the collaboration of Leonia, the social worker and the Oblate Sisters.
This project faces great difficulties, both because of the length of time needed for the gathering of information in Rwanda, and its assimilation in Italy.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
In order for us to reach our goals, we strongly believe in the importance of building solid ties and collaboration with the people we have met in Rwanda and in Italy. And above all we are convinced of the fundamental importance of guaranteeing them the continuity of our support.
In order to ensure the continuance of all these projects, UMUDUFU has to make monthly handouts. But to be able to do this, it relies on the contributions of all benefactors.
Here is how you can help:
On an Annual basis:
-190 € provides support for a child’s basic needs and that of his family for a month.
On a monthly basis:
-600 € guarantees that the 38 kids of the Canteen Project get a complete meal a day for one month. This sum includes the Cook’s salary as well as firewood for the wood stove and various utensils.
-480 € buys food for the Twizerane Association.
-165 € ensures the salaries of the Health Centre’s workers.
-135 € guarantees the on-going programme at the Health Centre
-200 € maintains the Street Kids in Ruhengeri.
-450 € provides for the Social Service at Kabgayi Hospital.
-0,70 € guarantees that a child has one meal from the Canteen Project.
-2,30 € provides a check-up in Kabgayi Hospital.
-20 € buys a goat for malnourished kids
And for:
0 € we ask for a little of your time to help promote UMUDUFU and sensitise people about our activities!
MURAKOZE CYANE
THANKYOU VERY MUCH!
